Chapter Twenty-Three

SATURDAY NIGHT, SECONDS BEFORE

T he electrician’s truck barreled away like it was in pursuit or being pursued. John watched Brent’s van like it was on fire.

Just ahead, John spotted the mansion – and two men dashing out – one carrying a striped chaise. John’s first thought was that Ed was trying to get away with an antique chaise. As the older man disappeared into the large container, another man fell outside the front door, face down, the second chaise rolling off the porch and onto the ground. They both appeared frantic to get out.

Larry stepped on the brake as they watched, finally stopping the van right next to the container in time to see a disheveled Ed step out of the container, headed to help Trevor. John stepped out to confront the two men before their mad dash to leave, hoping to get some update. From behind the mansion, the last of the sun’s rays were now gone; the approaching night had nulled a glorious summer sunset. John hoped that the mad dash they were witnessing signaled an evening of activity that he hoped would get his team more concrete proof this time.

The last three hours of reviewing the recordings had been a major disappointment: there was nothing taped besides the faceless man who starkly resembled the phantom at the hospital that Sally had seen. Sally, needless to say, now felt she was being followed by the specter.

All the sounds they’d heard, including the female voice that mimicked Sally, the smoke that materialized by the stairs, the feeling John got when he was in the bathroom – no video or audio were recorded. Even the whistle that mimicked his own whistle – and the floating “butler” on the screen that Sally, Ryan and Larry saw in the last few minutes before he shut off the kitchen monitor – were NOT recorded.

Sally felt somehow responsible, as she had been at the monitors to make sure her end was in functioning order. She felt somehow that she had missed something. She knew she had to be very thorough, as she was in her job as a nurse – which would have meant someone’s quality of care.

The sole event that transfixed them, terrified all of them to the core, was the sole video of the smoke that materialized like a tornado to take shape into a faceless man. That image was indelibly etched in John’s mind, and they gave a collective sigh when they saw it was recorded. The attic camera would be their first evidence of a real apparition, and he hoped that was enough to convince the owners so they could move forward with an appropriate referral. In this case, the local archdiocese.

John felt the house was toying with them: conspiring not to be recorded as much as it was conspiring not to be renovated. BUT the faceless man WAS willing to appear. The rest, all John had was collaborative witness testimonies of “noises” and terrifying feelings the crew got when they worked past daytime.
